Now that your tattoo has been finished and bandaged, we ask that you leave that bandage on for 2-4 hours unless you are told otherwise.
1. Clean hands first before remove the bandage. Once that has been done, wash the tattoo thoroughly with soap and water. Let your tattoo air dry after cleaning the first time, after that you can use a newly cleaned cloth to pat dry your tattoo. Please wait a minimum of at least half an hour before putting clothing on over the tattoo.
2. About three times a day you may want to moisturize. This is not necessary, but can help if you find your tattoo itchy. Make sure to thoroughly clean your hands before moisturizing. The number of times a tattoo needs to be moisturized will depend on how dry the area gets between applications. If it starts to get itchy or dry to the point of discomfort and redness, you may want to moisturize more frequently. You only need to apply a thin layer of moisturizer.
3. Washing once or twice a day will be necessary for the next two to three weeks. Please remember to keep hands clean before touching the tattoo. After about two weeks you’ll notice that the scabs start to flake off, they should fall off naturally, do not pick or peel them. Once the scabs have all fallen off you’ll see a waxy layer of skin underneath, this is normal. Although your tattoo may look and feel healed, it can take up to six weeks for your body to fully regenerate the skin in that area. Our suggestion is the keep moisturizing until this waxy layer is gone.
4. Avoid stagnant water, it can potentially contain a higher amount of bacteria. Baths, pools, open bodies of water, and hot-tubs are high risk areas, we recommend not swimming or using them for at least 7-10 days.
Caution
If you notice redness or irritation, it could be that your clothes are restrictive. Wear loose fitting clothes for the first couple weeks. Sometimes this can be caused by touching it with dirty hands. Do your best to leave your tattoo alone so it can heal naturally. Swelling does occur from time to time especially when getting tattooed on the lower extremities. Try to elevate the tattoo if swelling persists, ice if necessary. If you experience irritation, redness or swelling, please call our studio for input. If these symptoms persists for a period greater than 24hrs, contact a physician. If at anytime your tattoo is emitting a whitish or yellowish fluid, contact your physician immediately.
